Battle Festival maintains a firm commitment to community engagement and education. Alongside the programme of events, it runs an extensive range of workshops and demonstrations, many of them free or heavily subsidised.

Since its inauguration in 2014 the Festival has commissioned three new works by leading composers and writers, aimed at bringing new music to the region and providing singing opportunites for more than 1500 young people. These include Howard Moody (PUSH), Ian McMillian and Tony Biggin (Seven Ages of Man), Tony Biggin (We Won’t Be Druv).

The festival has also funded public and in-school workshops for The Winter Giant lantern procession, a youth residency with international contemporary choreographer Joseph Toonga at Claverham Community College, Battle and Langton and Netherfield Primary schools; free public demonstrations with artist-in-residence Martin Brockman and Ian Penney; workshops with Glyndebourne Education; and a range of African storytelling, drumming and singing events with Indigenous People and Yusuf Jallo.

The festival’s patron Tim Rice-Oxley has also mentored 12 emerging artists, and provided support opportunities for two of them at fundraising concerts; Back to Battle with Tom Chaplin and with his band Mt. Desolation.
