How to set a community group - practical advise

October 2025
Across Rother, people are finding new ways to bring their communities together — organising activities, supporting neighbours, and creating spaces where people feel welcome and connected. Much of this begins not with institutions, but with individuals: someone who sees a need and decides to act.

Across Rother, people are finding new ways to bring their communities together — organising activities, supporting neighbours, and creating spaces where people feel welcome and connected. Much of this begins not with institutions, but with individuals: someone who sees a need and decides to act.
These short videos are designed for those people.

They offer a calm and practical guide to starting a community project from scratch — including how to plan, organise, budget, apply for funding, and involve others along the way. Each section is intended to be clear, grounded, and useful to those with no prior experience.
We are grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund and to the players of the National Lottery for their generous support, which has made this resource possible.

If you are thinking about starting something — however small — we hope you will find something here that helps you take the first step.
