Battle Abbey Green: The Hidden History

July 21, 2024 at 3:00 pm

The line of Battle High Street began as a Neolithic ridge track. After the Battle of 1066 and the foundation of the Abbey, the town grew westwards along the trackway, divided into narrow and deep Burgess plots.
This medieval town plan can still be traced in the width of shopfronts and the twittens that run north and south off the street. And many of those medieval houses survive, some clad in stone demolished from the Abbey buildings after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, and some hiding behind Georgian and Victorian frontages.

Starting on the Abbey Green, architect and buildings archaeologist Stephen Howard Gray, will lead a gentle walk to show how to recognise these survivals from the town’s history.

This event also takes place on Sunday 28th July
