Macbeth is one of Shakespeare’s most renowned plays – the magic, the blood, the prophecy, the madness – but the question is: ‘Why?’
Stephen John’s solo shows explore characters from across Shakespeare’s works with performances of speeches and scenes by multiple characters all played by one actor. With the performance punctuated with personable interjections, Stephen John performs parts of the play whilst exploring the influences of legendary myths, the real history of Scotland, the understanding of magic, the reality of spirits and Shakespeare’s own historical writing context; all to endeavour to discover what makes Macbeth in particular a play ‘for all time’.
This is the Bowler Crab Theatre Company’s 39th Shakespeare production to date and Stephen’s fifth public one-person tour, having performed in ‘Why Will’ in 2021 and its restructured successor ‘The Seven Ages of Shakespeare’ in 2026, along with ‘Shakespeare & Comedy’ in 2022 and ‘Shakespeare & Christmas’ in 2025.
